What to Wear for Fall Minis

Wardrobe & Styling

A quick hello

You’re booked for fall minis—great choice. Autumn light in Hamilton is soft and warm, which means colors and textures really shine. Our goal is simple: everyone looks like themselves, the group feels pulled together, and the photos are easy to frame and love.

Start with a palette, not matching

Pick one colour story for the whole family, then mix pieces within it. Think coordinated, not identical. Choose one of these recipe cards (shown in the images you’ll receive) and you’re set:

Tip: lay everything on the bed together. If one item stands out, consider swapping it for a calmer tone or softer texture.

Shop your closet first

You don’t need a new wardrobe. Aim for pieces with shape and texture:

  • Knitwear: ribbed or cable sweaters add gentle dimension.
  • Structured layers: a jacket, vest, or long coat gives tidy lines.
  • Denim and twill: medium or dark washes read elevated.
  • Corduroy or suede: a skirt, boots, or a quilted vest brings warmth without busy patterns.

Keep patterns simple. Tiny stripes and loud prints steal attention from faces and can look odd on camera.

Shoes, hair, and small things that matter

Opt for closed-toe shoes in classic leather or suede for a polished look. If sneakers are your favorite, opt for those that are clean and simple. Match your socks and tights with your shoes or skin to keep things seamless. Since hands are often visible, well-groomed nails with a neutral polish look great. And if you wear glasses, we’ll position you just right to minimize glare, ensuring you look your best.

Dressing kids without the stress

Comfort wins. Soft knits, no scratchy tags, shoes they’ve worn before. If a favorite item must come, build the palette around it. Bring a small snack that won’t stain and a backup layer in case the wind picks up in Burlington or along the Hamilton trails.

What to skip

  • Neons and super-bright whites that bounce light.
  • Large logos, characters, or heavy graphics.
  • Head-to-toe black, which can flatten in autumn shade.

Night-before prep

  • Steam or press, then hang by person.
  • Pack a small kit: lint roller, hair brush, tissues, lip balm, spare socks/tights.
  • Put shoes by the door and tuck a warm layer that matches your palette into the bag.

Day-of checklist

  • Palette chosen and layered pieces ready
  • Neutral shoes on everyone
  • Snacks and comfort items for kids
  • Arrive a little early so we can settle in and use the best light
